Fishing in San Carlos is excellent. During summer months, as the water temperatures rise, the exotic big game species are present, including marlin, sailfish, dorado (mahi-mahi) and tuna. With deep water only a few miles off shore, even small boats can attempt to land the Big Ones. Several sportfishing tournaments are held in San Carlos each year. From late fall into spring, there is excellent bottom fishing in and around
the many islands and points in the area. Target species include red snapper, sea trout, yellowtail and sea bass.
Charter boats are available and the cost is reasonable for a full or half-day of fishing. The charter boats are fairly well equipped but if you are a serious fisherman, we suggest you bring your own tackle. The local skippers and mates are most eager to please and will even teach you if you're a beginner at saltwater angling. San Carlos also has charter boats available for sunset cruises or tours of the area.
If you bring your own boat to fish with, you will need individual fishing licenses. Boat permits are no longer required. See the Fishing Regulations page for information on sources and costs for licenses. Please observe daily bag limits and do practice catch and release.
